The term pool is used throughout this standard as an identifier for these bodies of water.
This standard covers design and performance criteria for circulation systems including components, devices, and related technology installed to protect against entrapment hazards in residential and public swimming pools, wading pools, inground spas, infinity edge basins, (infinity edge type pools) and catch Pools, and Aquatic Recreation Facilities.

This standard covers public swimming pools to be used for swimming, bathing, competitive activities, or recreational activities and operated by an owner, lessee, operator, licensee, or concessionaire, regardless of whether a fee is charged for use.

This standard is intended to cover permanently installed residential spas and swim spas and not public spas, swim spas or factory built residential portable spas, swim spas that are used for bathing and are operated by an owner. In this type of spa the heater and water circulating equipment are not an integral part of the product. The spa is intended as a permanent fixture, and is not intended to be moved.

This standard provides specifications for water quality parameters, but does not specify the technologies needed to achieve these values.

Pools covered by this standard are designed for free-form aquatic play and recreation and differ from those addressed in ANSI/NSPI-1: Standard for Public Swimming Pools. Pools covered by this standard include pools: wave action pools; activity pools; catch pools; leisure rivers; vortex pools; interactive play attractions - water treatment and filtration only.
