VC (ASC Z80): Vision Council

VC, the Vision Council, develops ANSI ASC Z80 standards for ophthalmic lenses, and the equipment, instruments and processes used in their final fabrication level. They are the leading voice for enhancing life through better vision - **Helping people see and be seen**. Their mission is to provide a forum to advocate better vision by promoting quality vision care products and services in the global community. Standards from VC (ASC Z80) are available both individually, directly through the ANSI webstore, and as part of a Standards Subscription. If you or your organization are interested in easy, managed, online access to standards that can be shared, a Standards Subscription may be what you need - please contact us at: or 1-212-642-4980 or Request Proposal Price.

ANSI Z80.3-2018

Ophthalmics - Nonprescription Sunglass and Fashion Eyewear Requirements

This standard applies to all nonprescription sunglasses and fashion eyewear, normally used for casual, dress, and recreational purposes, having lenses of substantially plano power. This standard specifically excludes products covered by ANSI Z87.1, ANSI Z80.1, and those covered within the ASTM F08.57 committee. Sunglass needs for aphakics may not be met by this standard.

ANSI Z80.36-2021

Ophthalmics - Light Hazard Protection for Ophthalmic Instruments

This standard specifies fundamental requirements for optical radiation safety for ophthalmic instruments and is applicable to all current ophthalmic instruments that direct optical radiation into or at the eye. It is also applicable to all new and emerging ophthalmic instruments that direct optical radiation into or at the eye, as well as to those portions of therapeutic or surgical systems that direct optical radiation into or at the eye for diagnostic, illumination, measurement, imaging, or alignment purposes.

ANSI Z80.1-2020

Ophthalmics - Prescription Ophthalmic Lenses - Recommendations

This standard applies to all prescription dress ophthalmic spectacle lenses in edged or assembled form. It is a guideline for entities that fabricate, assemble or process dress eyewear or lens components. Relevant optical and physical specifications and tolerances of this standard also apply to uncut lenses.

ANSI Z80.3 / ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 - Eyewear Requirements Set

ANSI Z80.3 / ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 - Eyewear Requirements Set

Use ANSI Z80.3 / ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 - Eyewear Requirements Set to establish the requirements and guidelines for the most durable, and safe eyewear for occupational, educational, or fashion purposes. The ANSI Z80.3 / ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 - Eyewear Requirements Set includes:
ANSI Z80.3-2018
ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020

ANSI Z80.35-2018

Ophthalmics - Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lenses

This standard applies to intraocular lenses (IOLs) whose function is the correction of aphakia, with extended range of focus above a defined functional visual acuity threshold to provide useful distance and intermediate vision with monotonically decreasing visual acuity from the best distance focal point. This standard addresses specific requirements for Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lenses (EDF IOLs) that are not addressed in the normative references, and include vocabulary, optical properties and test methods, mechanical properties and test methods, labeling, biocompatibility, sterility, shelf-life and transport stability, and clinical investigations necessary for this type of device. As with any standard, alternative validated test methods may be used.

ANSI Z80.20-2016

Ophthalmics - Contact Lenses - Standard Terminology, Tolerances, Measurements and Physicochemical Properties

Applies to contact lenses worn over the front surface of the eye in contact with the preocular tear film. The standard covers rigid intracorneal and haptic (scleral) contact lenses, as well as soft paralimbal contact lenses.

ANSI Z80.7-2013 (R2018)

Ophthalmic Optics - Intraocular Lenses

This standard applies to monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) whose primary indication is the correction of aphakia.

ANSI Z80.27-2014 (R2019)

Ophthalmics - Implantable Glaucoma Devices

The scope of this standard applies to devices that are implanted in the eye to treat glaucoma by facilitating aqueous outflow. The standard excludes glaucoma devices whose effect depends upon metabolic and/or pharmacologic mechanisms. The purpose of the standard is to describe the physical, mechanical and biocompatibility properties, as well as the elements of clinical protocols that may be useful in assessing the clinical performance of these devices.

ANSI Z80.28-2017

Ophthalmics - Methods of Reporting Optical Aberrations of Eyes

This standard specifies standardized methods for reporting the optical aberrations of eyes.

ANSI Z80.21-2020

Ophthalmics - Instruments - General-Purpose Clinical Visual Acuity Charts

This standard applies to displays of optotypes for all clinical visual acuity measurement systems that use recognition of optotypes and that are designed for general use including optotypes printed on opaque media, those intended for transillumination, electronically generated or projected displays. It does not apply to special testing of visual acuity, e.g., low-vision, or reverse polarity (e.g., white optotype on a dark background).
