Microphone-In-Real-Ear and Acoustic Test Fixture Methods for the Measurement of Insertion Loss of Circumaural Hearing Protection Devices

Describes two methods for the laboratory measurement of the insertion loss of any hearing protection device that enclosed the ears and makes circumaural contact with the head, such as earmuffs, helmets, and communications headsets. One method uses miniature microphones-in-real-ears (MIRE) of human subjects and the other uses an acoustic test fixture (AFT), sometimes called dummy head or artificial head, to determine insertion loss. The standard contains information on instrumentation, calibration, and electroacoustic requirements. Procedures are provided for fitting ear-mounted microphones and hearing protection devices to measure sound pressure levels at the ear, and methods for reporting the calculated insertion loss values.
