Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent hazard zones being reached by upper and lower limbs (ISO 13857:2019)


This document sets values for safety distances against the achievement of mechanical hazards in commercial and public areas. The safety distances are suitable for protective constructions. It also contains information on distances that prevent free access through the lower limbs. This document includes persons aged 14 and over (the 5th percentile of persons aged 14 and over is approximately 1 400 mm). Only for the upper limbs it provides additional information for children older than 3 years (5th percentile of persons from 3 years corresponds to about 900 mm) if passing through openings is to be taken into account. Data to prevent access for children with the lower limbs are not considered. These distances are applicable if sufficient risk reduction can be achieved by distance alone.
